Student Posts

Submitted by :  Janet Wortman

I am starting a new series for our blog called "Student Posts."

We have hundreds of students passing through the Online Learner Workshop each month.  While they are in the Workshop they are provided an opportunity to communicate with each other using the Student Helping Student forum in the discussion board.  We also ask them what applications and technology they are using in their lives.  These are ungraded discussion areas that are not a requirment of the workshop.

I will keep an eye on the discussion boards and will share some of their more interesting comments, both good and bad.  They will be taken exactly as posted with no editorial comments added.  Here we go...

Students Helping Students:

i think this workshop is a great one. This is not the first time i am taking an online class. i did take some in a different college, but i actually had to do a similar workshop. But this is more explicit, because as a first time learner it wasn't easy. Looking at the two colleges in terms of teaching online beginners, this is much better.  It is fun though!!!!! thanks!!  -  December 2011

online classes are cool, but whenever you need help its more intimidating to ask. - December 2011

I've never taken an online class but from what I hear they are better. You don't have to worry about going to class. They have their ups and downs though. Downfall of not having a CL class is that you don't have the teacher in front of you to ask questions.  -  November 2011

If I have to choose one format in particular it would have to be in-class. The reason for this is that an instructor is available first hand to asign a task with instructions, I can then ask questions and recieve immediate answers or direction. Peer evaluation is also there with which to reflect. My alternate preference would be internet. I am a novice and wish to learn more about how to use my computer. I can do the basics. However my experience using WebCt course is that I must first print those instructions or write them down step by step so that I don't have to keep opening and closing and going back to complete the required assigned task. I am also "old school" in that writing it down I can use it for reference as what to do. Using the WebCt I found that I would start something and needed to go back to see what to do next (per the examples) or the next step if the instructions were on one (screen, page, cite, form- I'm not sure what word to use here). Sometimes If I'm typing something I hit some button (not sure which one and gosh I hope I don't do it now) and it wipes the screen clean.....like a lost sock.....never to be found again.....or pulled up accidently much later after I have to retype EVERYTHING and if I haven't already written it down somewhere I have to start all over again. That is the frustration with on-line course for me. But it does teach me how to use my computer and that is ultimately what I wish so badly to do.  -  October 2011
